Many people will participate and will travel to Kela, a village known for its training of griots, for those who carry on a family’s or village’s oral traditions. The February tour tips its hat to “Visual Griots of Mali,” an exhibition on display through March 11 at UCLA’s Fowler Museum. The show features slice-of-life photos by West African sixth-graders. Among other highlights of the upcoming tour, led by University of London professor Trevor Marchand: a performance of the Sanga mask dancers, dancing and music in the desert with the Taureg, the masquerade of the Bamana and Bozo people in Ségou, the Konboro Mosque in Djénné, said to be the world’s largest mud structure, and ancient illuminated manuscripts in Timbuktu.

Morocco: Ramadan ‘ protest picnickers’face prosecution

Moroccan authorities are expected to prosecute a group arrested for organizing a forest picnic to protest a law that forbids Muslims from eating publicly during Ramadan fasting hours, media reports say, but as would be picnickers arrived at the train station in Mohammedia, they were met by a large police squad that searched them and took the names and phone numbers of some of them, according to a statement issued by Human Rights Watch. There were more than 100 police officers, riot police and military personnel had “besieged” the train stations and nearby areas.

Ex President Bush went on a trip to Ghana to host something. He is the host for a state dinner for the president of Ghana John Kufuor. His distaste for formal occasions notwithstanding, a state dinner is the least Bush could do for the African president. He had visited Ghana February in Accra. He hosted a state dinner that was provided by the cast of Lion King.

The win for the world cup took place in Egypt. It was in the International Stadium in Cairo to play soccer. It ended 0-0 after 120 tedious minutes before Ghana prevailed in the penalty shootout, 4-3. There was many people who went to watch the winning of the world cup. 67,814 people were not treated to a good soccer game. Hungary is in second place for the World Cup.

U.S. learned intelligence on airline attack suspect while he was en route

“The people in Detroit were prepared to look at him in secondary inspection,” a senior law enforcement official said. “The decision had been made. The [database] had picked up the State Department concern about this guy — that this guy may have been involved with extremist elements in Yemen.” A Nigerian man got on board of an airplane bombed a plane while it was flying from Amsterdam to Detroit. He came from Ghana. They are requiring a foreign visitor to undergo special scrutiny upon arrival in the U.S. is considerably lower than criteria for stopping a passenger’s departure overseas, according to current and former law enforcement officials.

Fire razes house of former president Ghanaian President Jerry Rawlings

Former Ghanaian President Jerry Rawlings says a fire razed his home early this morning. The good thing was that he wasn’t home when it happened. His wife and daughters were there at the time, but they escaped the fire without any inguries. The fire was around four in the morning. A person named Adam says that the fire had destroyed the former presidents personal effects for him and his family.

West Africa’s last giraffes make suprise comeback

A guy named Z ibo Mounkaila was in the back of his pick up truck when a big suprise happened. GIRAFFES!!!!! They are one of the tallest animals on earth and they’re wandering around the villages in West Africa. They are not suppose to be there in Africa, but people think that they traveled form some other place in Africa to West Africa. There hasn’t been Giraffes since a hundred years ago. There were giraffes all over Chad in the heart of the continent. It was like an extinction, but they came back out of nowhere. Now there are just nine giraffes in West Africa which are distinguished in a geographical area. Ten years ago, 140,00 giraffes appeared in Africa.

Gun attack on Togo team bus casts pall over African Nations Cup

The gunfire that happened was a suprise to many people. It killed three people and had injured eight. It is reproted to say that the gunfire had even killed the bus driver of the team. They had been schedualed to have trained in Angola and play against Ghana. They can’t play anymore because of the terrible event that had happened most of there team is gone. The shooting lasted for half an hour. People are saying that the people who started attacking the Togo team was held by separist rebels.

U.S. prosecution links drugs to terrorism

Three men were arrested because they pretended to be asscociates of Al Qaeda. They conspired cocaine all through Africa. They were charged in New York. They were arrested in Ghana during a Drug Enforcement Administrqation sting and are reported to be from Mali. Al Qaeda has also been charged under severe narco-terrorism laws. There was an 18 page complaint stating that mafias and terrorists in northwest Africa. It caused an increasing alarm among European, African and U.S. investigators. The cocaine traffic has risen in West Africa in recent years.

Google scraps China cell phone launch amid despute

Google postponed the launch of two mobil phones in China. They had added to a commercial fallout of its despute over an internet censorship and e-mail hijacking. The two mobil phones were motorola and samsung. Theses two phone are powered by Android. Android is a mobile operating software system that is developed by google. Google is planning to shut down their search engine and pull out China unless the government decides to relent the rules. Google has decided to challenge the restrictions on free expression after the attack happened. If google leaves then China phones will be no more.
